    Rachel’s friend, Laura, competed in barrel race with one of the two horses that she used exclusively for that event. She retained a professional permit in the sport and had earned some go-round money and a little bit of cash from finishing in the top five a number of times, but she hadn’t yet achieved the top spot, but seemed to be moving closer as the summer advanced.

    It was one of the craziest affairs Rachel had ever watched. She had certainly never encountered anything like it back in Ohio. Three drums, typically empty 50 gallon barrels, that were decorated using the thematic style of the rodeo, were arranged in the form of a triangle. The horse and rider dashed into the arena, turned quick and close around one of the barrels at the base of the triangle, then dashed across to the other barrel at the base of the triangle, dashed to the third at the tip of the triangle, and then sprinted back across the start/finish line at top speed.

    It was spectacular to see the horses plunging and turning and then laying themselves out as they rocketed to the finish. Rachel was beside herself desiring to try it out. She would
