Haunted Hospitals - Granger T Barr

    Resident Spirit

We have a haunted room with only eight mattresses, two on the right and six on the left, and a nurse workstation in the middle.

I was chatting with the nurses at the hospital desk early one morning when I noticed from the corner of my eye

this older gentleman, slowly walking into the final room

I started running towards him because no one should stand or walk unaided. Finally, I got to the room. It was empty, and only then did I realise that we had no patients in that room. Then, I turned around, and  I went back to the nurse's room, where everyone was smiling at me. I asked them, "Did you see another patient in the bed?. The nurses giggled at me, and one nurse said, Honey, you made us laugh the way you ran. So, now you have met our resident ghost; we haven't seen him in a long while, not until today."

Everyone in the hospice would say this to newbies. They would reassure them that the old gentleman would only introduce himself to people he liked, which meant I was now initiated and entirely accepted as a team member.

    The Oncology Unit

Iwork in an adult oncology unit where, unfortunately, we have a lot of comfort care patients.

Most of them would transition to a hospice where they sometimes live out their final days, don't make it, and pass away while they're still in the hospital or rather the hospice.

Naturally, we have the most deaths in the hospice unit, and many don't really like coming up to the floor because everyone dies. But, all staff love the place, and there is so much love between all the nurses and our patients. We get to know them well. When people pass away, we notice that, not surprisingly, it comes in threes, as they say.

There are weeks when no one dies. Everyone pulls out of there and onto a hospice or another facility, where they choose where to die. They usually have only a week or two to have three to six deaths inside
