    Neither mentioned it until Max swung the car out into the traffic flowing by the airport, then Sandi twisted to face me, her blonde cheerleader prettiness solemn, and announced, Paul has disappeared, you know. The seat on the big jet had been cramped, but that was nothing like the lack of comfort for a big man in the rear seat of their compact. I shifted to a more comfortable position, letting her words sink in.

    Exactly what do you mean by disappeared? Just haven’t heard from him or what?

    Disappeared. Gone, said Max. Not seen or heard of. Two weeks ago. No one knows where he is. This neighbor, Barclay, became concerned when he didn’t see him. Paul had said nothing about going away, and he always had in the past. Barclay worried a few more days and then called the police, thinking maybe they had someone unidentified in a hospital or something. Nothing. Now the police are carrying Paul on the records as a missing person. Concern touched his voice. If he were dead, there would be a body, wouldn’t there?

    I would think so. When did you last see him?
