      Dorothy knew she was beautiful in the same way that she knew that she was clever. It had always been so and she didn’t need to be reminded. This air of confidence and assuredness often brought out the worst in everyone she encountered. She was used to this. It had been a constant and she found it much easier to simply isolate herself and have some peace rather than meet the men who would ogle her and assume that she was stupid or have to endure the sharp looks other women gave her. It was as if she was to be punished for genetic gifts.

      After many failed attempts at working with the public, she found the perfect job. She was an IT specialist for a large company. She spent most of her day in her office in the basement, monitoring the network and solving problems for the company mostly via phone.
