    INTRODUCTION

My first acrostic poetry was written in 1958. I was 15 years old and in third year high school at Ilocos Sur High School in Vigan, Philippines. I was a shy guy and had a ‘crush’ on this classmate named NIDA PATI who had this striking resemblance of a young Jackie Kennedy Onassis. I was so terribly shy that the only courage I could muster to approach her is creating a poem exclusively only for her – my first acrostic poem coming from an anonymous secret admirer. Written in Ilocano, our vernacular dialect. Here’s how it goes:

Sadly, she never knew who sent that poem, ‘cause I never signed my name as the sender. When I was in college, my best friend the late Noel Encarnacion (who I composed an acrostic for his then girlfriend Norma Padua), broke the news that my high school ‘crush’ eloped with a student priest seminarian! My response: I recited my first acrostic poem to my friend and got a pat on my back.

Why did I create these binary acrostics? To do the impossible. To challenge myself as a positivility thinker. To accomplish the unaccomplishable and think of the unthinkable! Beside doing my musical talents like playing the guitar and harmonica solo, I perform ‘arnis’ the Philippines national sports of native fencing. As a guitar player, I’m mediocre as compared to Chet Atkins or Tommy Emmanuel. As a harmonica soloist, between amateur and mediocre compared to Muddy Waters or Larry Adler. But if I play both my guitar and harmonica simultaneously without the pocket harp holder, I become an amazing performer! Performed this feat at Student Canteen, a TV/Radio Philippines national talent show just like America’s Got Talent and won Student of the Day! (Google Tom Rivada, Laboratory Song). As an ARNIS player I was chosen to exhibit the native sports at the Seattle World’s Fair during the Philippine Independence week in July 4, 1962.

Examples above, are reasons why I created a difficult form of poetry. One of my role models is Cyrano de Bergerac. He was a poet and a swashbuckler. He did his oral poetry in a disguised voice for his friend trying to woo Cyrano’s cousin Roxanne (who happens to be Cyrano’s secret love). Story of my life. But never been in love with any of my cousins. Coincidentally, our similarities are in the martial arts. Cyrano was a swordsman and a poet and I’m an Arnis fencer and a published binary poetry writer. I composed poems for my friends like my late buddy Noel Encarnacion (who I let him took credits for the composition) for his girlfriend Norma Padua who later became his bride. When I visited Norma in their home, the framed poem is hanging in their kitchen wall. That’s the power of a personally composed acrostic poetry.

Composing binary acrostic poetry is like Leonardo da Vinci paintng the Mona Lisa. It’s very personal. The pen is my brush and the special words beginning with a special letter and ending the selected letter that spells the name. In other words my acrostic palette is my Microsoft Surface laptop where I mix colorful musical words that rhyme at the end of each verse.

    ACKNOWLEDGEMENT

Thanks for my son Terence Rivada for typing and scanning my manuscript. Very grateful also to Ms. John.Karl@XLIBRIS.com who made it possible for publishing my collection of creative scribblings.
