About this ebook

Prequel to an upcoming release in the Demented Sons MC, Texas series!

Owen:

I used to be Sergeant Owen Williams, but now I don't know who the hell I am.

After my last deployment unraveled, leaving chaos in its wake, I walked away from the Marine Corps. The problem was, my ghosts followed me. Relentlessly.

Never in a million years did I expect a furry, four-legged guardian angel to step in and change my path. Nor was I prepared for the hot mess of a woman that accompanied him.

Tori and her cantankerous dog were everything I never knew I needed in my life. Except my fear and issues ruined everything. Left with my ghosts, I was spiraling without her.

So I came to a conclusion.

Come hell or high water, I was going to show her I was worth forgiving.

    About the Author

To Ryan Kinch. Though I may not have known you personally, you will never be forgotten. This one is for you.

Look at her, Boseman said as he proudly held up the picture of his daughter he hadn’t met yet. Isn’t she beautiful?

Good thing she looks like her momma, Kirkson drawled in his Mississippi twang as he kept both hands on the wheel and his eyes on the dusty road ahead. We hit a bump and it damn near rattled our teeth loose.

That ain’t no lie, Boseman admitted with a goodhearted chuckle once we settled. My dog, Bronze, ignored us as he kept a keen eye on our surroundings. Thankfully, this was cleared as a safe route.

    Or so we thought.

An explosion went off several vehicles up and everyone swerved off the road to avoid hitting the crew in front of them.

Goddamn it! Edwards cursed when gunfire exploded from the hilltop to the west and everyone scrambled out of the JLTV. The way we stopped left us at an angle with only slight coverage.

The pinging of bullets hitting metal mixed with the voices of my team as everyone dove for cover. Right when I was rounding the safer side of the vehicle, I thought a goddamn truck rammed my side. My hip hurt like a motherfucker and my leg went out from under me. Like a ton of bricks, I hit the ground.

It was a nightmare as Bronze helped drag me the rest of the way around the vehicle. He was a damn smart dog.

Jesus. Three were down that I could see. Kirkson, Boseman, and Edwards, from what I could tell but with all the dust in the air it was hard to make out much. Fuck, where was Brody?

Brody! I shouted in a hoarse voice.

Leaning against the side of the JLTV tire, I winced and tried to keep myself from hyperventilating. Fuck, my hip and leg hurt like a bitch. A quick look down confirmed my fears. Grabbing both sides of the hole in my pants, I ripped it open to see what I was working with. There didn’t seem to be an exit wound on my thigh, but I couldn’t see my hip to assess the damage.

O.W.! Fuck, I’m hit. I’m hit! Oh, Jesus, O.W., I heard Brody call out to me but I couldn’t tell which direction it was coming from.

Brody! Stay down! Where are you? I shouted to be heard over the chaos, not that I would be much help because I couldn’t fucking move. Fumbling with the packaging, I tried to get the pressure dressing free to cover the wound that had blood soaking my pants. Doing the best I could, I jammed the dressing on the entry hole. Gritting my teeth, I roared briefly at the pain, then wrapped the fabric strips around and tied it tight. After that, I prayed.

Brody! I called out because he hadn’t answered me. Sweat ran in my eyes, leaving behind a sting and worse vision. Gunfire surrounded us but I wasn’t even sure who was shooting.

The second we realized we were being ambushed, we had called in for some kind of back up. The problem was, we had no idea who might be close enough. From the sounds of things, we were running out of time.

Brody! I screamed again, but there was no reply. Fuck! Fuck, no, fuck!

More yelling, more gunfire, and all I could do was hold my rifle and hope I got off a shot before anyone that wasn’t friendly came around either side of the vehicle. Usually, I was good. Better than good. But usually I didn’t have a couple of bullet holes in me.

A man came into sight and my rifle was on him. In the split second I used to assess if he was friend or foe, I was processing the gun he pointed at me. I pulled the trigger and he dropped. The recoil of my rifle threw me back and I knew I must be weakening.

Foreign voices could be heard in the distance and I had to fight down the panic. Bronze’s ears perked up and he looked at me.

I know, buddy, I groaned as shit began to spin and I finally fell over.
