      The volume you’re looking for is over to your right, Juan, in the How-To section, Carol Forsythe directed politely, nodding to better guide the dark-skinned man toward his target, Landscape Architecture for Simpletons. Her gold-flecked hazel eyes followed his gracefully slouching form, her expression carefully guarded.

      Unworthy. Swarthy. Features maybe even a little coarse… did she detect a uni-brow? Carol’s breath quickened, her mind racing. The powerfully built groundskeeper probably had a hairy back, judging by the furred knuckles peeking below the sleeves of his grass-stained overalls. She closed her eyes, hands gripping the edge of the polished mahogany reference desk. She gulped audibly and took a deep breath, but stopped suddenly, almost groaning as the pungent odor of cut grass assaulted her sensitive nose.

      Exhaling slowly, she opened her eyes, taking in the library’s calm, orderly lobby with its neutral carpeting, cream-colored walls and wooden shelves. Her glance swept the room, brushing past Juan, a soccer mom wrestling pop-up books from the grubby hands
