About this ebook

“Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble.” This statement from Job 14:1 is as true today as it was thousands of years ago, when it was penned. Though we all suffer, throughout the Bible, from Genesis to Revelation, there are precious verses of comfort that can lift our spirits.

The Comfort Bible offers help for those going through troublesome times. First, it presents a series of meticulously gathered comfort verses in the order they appear in the Bible. Then, it places all of these verses into categories, allowing for easy use. This collection can serve as a valuable resource for anyone experiencing trials and troubles and for pastors and religious leaders to share with their flocks or with those in need. With these verses, you can find answers from God, gain enlightenment on your journey, be inspired to righteousness, and draw closer to God.

This Bible study guide shares a variety of verses of comfort and inspiration to help the seeking soul find solace.

    DEDICATION

Dedicated to Dr. Hugh Reeves, a urologist in Greenville, NC, and my hero, whom God used to save my life.

Blessed be God, even the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies, and the God of all comfort; Who comforteth us in all our tribulation, that we may be able to comfort them which are in any trouble, by the comfort wherewith we ourselves are comforted of God. (2 Corinthians 1:3–4)

For whatsoever things were written aforetime were written for our learning, that we through patience and comfort of the scriptures might have hope. (Romans 15:4)

In the multitude of my thoughts within me thy comforts delight my soul. (Psalm 94:19)

    PREFACE

My doctor looked at me and said, I think you need a heart catheterization. Those were words I did not want to hear.

So there I was in the hospital. I was prepped for the cath and given the happy juice (a sedative) to keep me calm during the procedure. Everything seemed to be going fine as I calmly lay there until the doctor came to his conclusion.

We’re not able to put stents in, he said. It looks like you’re going to need a quadruple bypass, open-heart surgery. Do you want to do that?

Still very calm because of my happy medicine, I said, Sure.

We have an opening on Monday morning first thing.

Sure, I calmly said as I calmly thought, What have I done?

The catheterization was on Tuesday morning, and they thought it best that I stay in the hospital until Monday’s open-heart surgery. I was admitted. My wife and I found a quiet place to search for comfort verses in our Bibles, and she wrote them in a notebook. At first, verses came to us easily, but as the hours and days flowed, we found it harder to think of verses. We went to the hospital chapel thinking we would find some literature there with comfort verses in it but found only one small brochure with a few verses. We wound up with three pages of handwritten verses.

I began thinking it would be good for someone to go through the Bible and find comfort verses that would help in times of need.

The day of the operation came, and it turned out to be a triple bypass. The doctor said that everything had gone well. After some time in the recovery room, I went back to my room.

When I seemed to need it, my wife would share with me a verse of comfort she had written down. Many times a day, she would read from those verses to me. What a blessing that was! During that time, I saw the need for a study on comfort from the Bible.

When we came home, my wife printed out many of those verses and posted them all over the house. They were such a blessing as I struggled to recover.

This is when I started my study through the Bible looking for verses of comfort. My desire was to help others going through what I was going through or any other trial.

It was when I had reached somewhere in Psalms in my study that Katherine, a woman in our church, was diagnosed with a very aggressive cancer that was in its final stages. The doctors told her that she had only days to live (which turned out to be true). I printed out what I had completed of The Comfort Bible and took it to her in the hospital.

Two days later, my wife and I went to see her. She was sitting in the chair next to her bed reading those comfort verses. I stopped and looked at that scene for a few moments before we entered. I knew I had to finish the book.

A few months later, when I was close to finishing the first section of the Comfort Bible, I began running a low-grade fever. I did not give it much thought until Saturday morning, when I began feeling bad. A few minutes later, I started talking gibberish. My wife took my temperature—105 degrees. I was transported to our hospital and then airlifted to a larger facility within two hours. I had drifted into a coma. They quickly determined that I had sepsis, but they could not find the source of the infection. The next day, Sunday, the doctors told my wife that it would be good to call in the family; it did not look like I was going to make it.

Dr. Reeves, a urologist, was on duty. (I dedicated this book to him.) When a person is in intensive care at the hospital I was in, they assign a team of doctors to that patient’s care. Dr. Reeves decided to take another look at the CT scan that all the team had looked at on Saturday. None had seen the source of the sepsis. But on that Sunday morning, he saw some bubbles in my kidney that were barely noticeable and suspected that that was the source of the infection. Within two hours, he had put a stent into my kidney to drain the fluid trapped there. It was E. coli. As the infection drained, my recovery began. I told the doctor months later that if he had decided to go to breakfast instead of looking again at my CT scan, I would not have been there. I also told him that he was my hero, and he is. I know that it was God who ultimately saved my life, but God used him as an integral part.

For eight days, I was in a coma. Every day throughout the day, doctors and nurses would tell my wife something like, He’s a very sick man. I believe they were preparing her for my dying or being a vegetable for the rest of my life. I thank God. He had different plans.

On the ninth day, I came out of the coma. My wife and a doctor were there. Tubes were down my throat, wires were running off me going everywhere it seemed, and banks of monitors surrounded the head of my bed. My pastor said it look like the bridge of Star Trek’s spaceship, Enterprise.

As I lay there having just awoken and completely blocked from talking, the thought came to mind that I could write a note. I feebly made a motion with my shaking hands as if I were writing on a pad. The doctor saw it and exclaimed, Oh! he wants to write something! and then ran off. While he was away, I thought, What do I want to write? He came back with a pad and pen that he gave me. With difficulty, I wrote, Am … I … going … to … die? He laughed when he read it and said, I’m not a doctor of the dead but of the living. He laughed again and said some other things that passed me by. He was elated, and I took that to mean I was going to live.

It has been a difficult recovery to regain my health and learn how to walk again. Even as this manuscript was being sent to the publishers, my recovery was not yet complete. When I was released from the hospital after forty-one days, I continued my study for The Comfort Bible. I had a renewed desire to help others who were going through serious trials.

The Bible is such a source of strength. It increases the faith of those who study it. The Bible teaches about God and our relationship with Him. How comforting it is to know that He knows our situation, loves and cares for us, and hears and answers our prayers. The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want (Psalm 23:1).

I have been praying and will be praying that God will use the scriptures in The Comfort Bible to comfort you.

    ACKNOWLEDGMENTS

Thanks to my precious Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. This book would not have been accomplished without His initiating the desire in my heart, strengthening me, guiding me, and helping me in every way. All praise and glory to Him.

Also, thanks to my dear, precious wife, who supported and encouraged me from the start to the conclusion. Her love for me was obviously displayed in her efforts to help finish this book.

    INTRODUCTION

This book came out of several deep personal trials. My desire is that it will help others who are going through difficult times. Job 14:1 states, Man that is born of a woman is of few days, and full of trouble. This is why I believe we need The Comfort Bible. I hope this book is of great comfort to you.

All the italicizing and bolding in cited scripture are mine. It is not to show the importance of one part of the verse over the others but to indicate the part of the verse that the notation refers to.

I chose all the verses in this book, but they are not an exhaustive list of comfort verses in the Bible, which is itself a comfort Bible. The Holy Spirit could use any verse in the Bible to be a comfort to someone. I sought God’s leadership in my quest to identify comfort verses, but reading them will not replace an earnest study of the whole Bible.

The notations included with the verses are not in any way translations of the verses. Initially, they were to help me categorize the verses, but I ended up seeing value in them. The notations explain the italicized portion of the verse.

There are two parts to The Comfort Bible. The first part is the verses in order as they would be seen in scripture. It starts in Genesis and follows the chronological trail to Revelation. This is how I first studied to compile the verses.

The second part contains the categories of the verses in the first part of the book. This allows the reader to read verses similar to those in the first part. For example, the first verse in the first part of the book is Genesis 1:1. It has a designator of A-37. When a person goes to the second part, categories, and finds the section A-37, there will be a list of verses similar to Genesis 1:1. In this case, A-37 has the heading of God Has Created All.

There are two basic ways to use The Comfort Bible. The first way deals with the first section. This method is to simply read the verses in order in The Comfort Bible. When attention is directed to or especially when the Holy Spirit draws attention to a particular verse, the category can be looked up to find similar verses.

The second way is to look at the table of contents for the category section and then find a section heading that would be interesting to study.

The importance of this book is the scripture. Everything is designed to direct the reader’s eyes to the verses. Since trials can be frustrating, disorienting, and confusing, I hope the vast wisdom of God’s holy Word will comfort, guide, and steady the reader.

To find comfort in this book, one must be a saved child of God. According to 1 Corinthians 2:14, only people who have come to Jesus and received His salvation can understand the Bible: But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned. The first place in this book that an unsaved person should go to is section E in the categories part, which gives verses about salvation.

So however the Lord will lead you in reading this book, there are tremendous treasures in the scriptures presented here. There is no better place to go in a trial than to God and His holy Bible.

Have faith in God’s Word. Trust in God’s Word. Believe God’s Word. You will find the answer there.
