      The sky was like hell. Thick smoke clouds snowed down ash as they swirled from above. In the distance, the tangerine glow of a growing fire illuminated just behind the line of evergreens that fenced along the hills. It had run wild through the California countryside for four weeks now and was finally stalled by the mountains as it plotted its next move.
