Chapter 1
Hailed
Damn it to hell.
As much grief as I’d given my mama for none too subtly insisting that I’d get to this point, finally—finally—my clock was ticking. And that bitch was loud.
Mama had cackled with glee when I’d admitted it to her. In her eyes, we were years past when she should’ve received her first grandchild. In my eyes—the more important set—I needed to get all of my selfishness out first. I’d watched her and my daddy give my brother and I everything they had without leaving much for themselves, and I decided at an early age that I was going to wait. I declared before even graduating high school that I would travel, experience the world’s wonders, rack up points on my hoe card, figure out what kind of career I wanted, and then, when I was good and satiated enough to slow down, I would do the family thing.
So, here I was.
Degreed, tanned, gainfully employed, secure in who I’d become as a woman, and ready to get a bae, lock him down, and make some babies. Daniella, my bestie since junior high, had squealed with excitement when I’d shared the news with her, which was a significantly less annoying response than the one I’d gotten from my mama. Mama called it a gotcha
, Danie looked at it as fate. She’d recently gotten serious with a guy that she’d met at the blind date mixer she’d attended the year before and saw me being ready to settle down as us always being in alignment.
You should do the Lock & Key event here in Diamondville!
she’d exclaimed, face glowing with joy through the screen of my phone. Even with the low quality of the video chat, I could see the happiness all over her as if it were a blanket she’d wrapped herself in. I went into it thinking it would be something fun and casual, and while it started off that way, what I found with Lucky turned out to be so much more. I want that for you, friend.
And I wanted the same, which is why I’d paid the hefty fee to be a participant in the second annual Cupid’s Choice Lock & Key Blind Date Event. I wasn’t quite sure how I felt about paying nearly four-hundred-dollars on the hope that trained professionals would match me with my soul mate, but I couldn’t deny how well it had worked out for my friend.
The matchmaking event was in the evening but during the day was the Cupid’s Choice Festival. According to Lucky, it was one of the half dozen events that the city of Diamondville went all out for, and from the packed parking lot, it was clear that people came out in droves for it. At the entrance was a ticket booth where festival attendees could not only pay the entrance fee and purchase food and drink tickets, but choose between two packages which each came in the form of a rubber bracelet. The options were unlimited food and beverages or unlimited rides and games.
Lucky had talked up the food at this thing as he made Danie and I a full breakfast of heart-shaped pancakes dyed pink, smoked salmon, sautéed asparagus, and poached eggs, so I had every intention of sampling the goods, but the matchmaking event included a five-course meal, so I wasn’t interested in getting too full. With my unlimited games bracelet secured, I passed through the entry gates and was instantly hit with a burst of nostalgia.
Although the decorations were explosions of pink, red, and
