GROUP PSYCHOLOGY AND THE ANALYSIS OF THE EGO (1921)

INTRODUCTION

IN THE SPIRITUAL LIFE OF THE INDIVIDUAL, THE OTHER COUNTS AS A MODEL, AS AN OBJECT, AS AN AUXILIARY AND AS AN ENEMY; THAT IS WHY FROM THE VERY BEGINNING, INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGY IS SIMULTANEOUSLY SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY

The subject's relationships with his parents and siblings, with his love object, teacher or doctor, have the right to be considered social phenomena. Thus, they come into opposition with other processes, called by psychoanalysis, narcissistic, in which drive satisfaction withdraws from the influence of other people, or renounces them. Therefore, the opposition between social and narcissistic mental acts would belong to the field of individual psychology and could not be separated from social or mass psychology. Now, when it comes to this type of phenomenon, the object of inquiry is the simultaneous influence of a large number of people on an individual who is linked. This link is the social drive, which leads to integrate him into a people, a caste, an institution or an organized multitude.

    CHAPTER 1 INTRODUCTION

In this famous article Freud carries out a DEMYSTIFYING OF THE OPPOSITION BETWEEN INDIVIDUAL PSYCHOLOGY AND SOCIAL PSYCHOLOGY.

The first one usually refers to the various ways in which each individual manages to satisfy his instincts and drives. The second of these is taken exclusively, and in a reductionist way according to Freud, with respect to the great collective phenomena (peoples, castes, classes, institutions, multitudes, etc.).

Freud believes that this is a mistake. The main reason he adduces is that ONLY ON VERY FEW OCCASIONS DOES THE INDIVIDUAL DISREGARD HIS FELLOWS of him IN THE COURSE OF HIS MENTAL LIFE of him. He exemplifies through FAMILY RELATIONSHIPS with parents and siblings, with his LOVING PARTNERS and with the relationship with the PSYCHOANALYST. Although these types of ties do not involve large masses, they ARE SOCIAL PHENOMENA for Freud. Freud thinks that THE NUMBER OF INDIVIDUALS that make up a collective phenomenon CANNOT HAVE SUCH A DETERMINING IMPORTANCE to produce differences between the instinctive and drive impulses with which individuals satisfy their needs.

In the various types of COLLECTIVE PHENOMENA, the ORGANIZATION is always related to an END (in the sense of motive). What Freud does think is that the APPEARANCE OF INSTINCTS AND DRIVES CAN BE BETTER OBSERVED IN ITS ORIGIN THROUGH LINKS of the FAMILY type.

    CHAPTER 4 SUGGESTION AND LIBIDO
