CHAPTER 1
DEFINITION OF LEADERSHIP
LEADERSHIP:
There are several definitions of
Leadership, but the one that I chose closest to my heart is:
Leadership is the art of leading others to deliberately create a resultthat wouldn’t have happened otherwise.
Good leaders are able to deliberately create challenging results by enlisting the help of others.
Everyone may not be destined to be a leader, however Leadership is not always a privilege, it can also be a necessity depending on situations and circumstances. It need not always be an honour bestowed upon you, it could also be the courage, commitment, sincerity and good will that one can show in different situations and circumstances.
It is said that some are born leaders. The reason this is said is due to the fact that history has witnessed and we are still seeing it happen that children at a very young age display unimaginable maturity in dealing with situations and circumstances, they also exhibit tremendous patience and perseverance which is highly unusual at a very young age.
Universally, all children are better in comparison to adults when it comes to being truthful, trustworthy and forgiving. They don’t know how to lie, they don’t know how to cheat and last but not the least they don’t take revenge. These are the very attributes that one would need to be a Good Leader. However, as children grow they come under the influence of the society around them and slowly start losing grip on their natural ability of retaining what they were born with.
So, a born leader could basically be the one who is able to hold on to these special attributes, that each and everybody was born with despite coming under the influence of the society, that constantly influences in fading out the inherent attributes that all of us were born with.
CHAPTER 2
ELEMENT OF EMOTIONS IN LEADERSHIP
While there are innumerable good
leaders there are only some Great Leaders to name a few whom the whole World recognizes are Mahatma Gandhi, Nelson Mandela, Mother Theresa, Martin Luther King, Dalai Lama etc., What is it about these leaders that sets them apart as Great Leaders? The most pertinent characteristic about these leaders is their ability to influence without any power bestowed on them and followership – millions of followers all around the globe. Is this a characteristic that all leaders are able to imbibe as good leaders, it is not impossible, however it is possible if they can demonstrate what I call as ‘Emotional Leadership’. What is Emotional Leadership? It is Leadership that has emotional connect. Leaders who are able to connect emotionally are also able to bear emotional influence on others, thus leading to Emotional Leadership.
The essence of Emotional Leadership is in it’s Emotional Quotient. The ability of a Leader to regulate their own emotions in the course of actively listening to said and unsaid, self-aware of beliefs, unconscious bias and thereby emotionally connect and bear a lasting influence on other’s emotional state is a characteristic of Emotional Leadership. A leader who can be selfless to the extent that they make other’s issues their
