Chapter 1: What Is Dropshipping?
Dropshipping is a type of 'fulfillment model.' In a business sense, fulfilment means delivery, so dropshipping is the method by which orders are delivered to customers.
Normally, selling a physical product entails purchasing an inflated number of items and then reselling them at a higher price. Normally, you would do this as a reseller. Here, you would buy wholesale items (inventory purchased in bulk at a discounted price) and then resell it at a higher price, keeping the difference (your profit margin).
The problem with this model is that you must first make a large investment in stock and then deliver the products to your customers. This means you're taking a financial risk by ordering the stock ahead of time (if you don't sell anything, you'll lose a lot of money). At the same time, it implies that you must not only pay for shipping but also handle all administrative tasks. You'll need to keep track of your inventory all the time, and you'll have to refund customers for deliveries that don’t arrive.
In short, it's a lot to ask of someone who wants to run a business from home in their spare time.
Dropshipping alters this because the wholesaler is now in charge of delivery and does not require you to order in bulk.
It's as simple as that: you list the items for sale in your online store as usual, and when a customer orders them, you pass the sale directly to the wholesaler. They then ship the product on your behalf and ensure that it reaches the buyer and that you receive money!
Affiliate Marketing vs. Dropshipping
Although this may appear to be very similar to affiliate marketing, there are a few key differences. To begin with, the amount of money you earn will be greater than that of affiliate marketing. When you work as a reseller, you will most likely use a pricing method known as 'keystone pricing.' Keystone pricing essentially means that the price you sell the product for is twice as much as the price you pay the manufacturers. This is one of the most common conventions for this type of business, and dropshipping businesses are, to all intents and purposes, resellers.
Another significant advantage of dropshipping over affiliate marketing is that you do not have to mention the dropshipping business at all. In other words, the customer is unaware that you are not the one selling the product. You're not redirecting them to another website where they can check out and buy the product – you're simply selling them the product as if it were your own and then forgetting about it. This is fantastic because it means your business will appear much more professional, and you will no longer be sending visitors away from your brand in order to make sales!
