Introduction
Wherefore, holy brethren, partakers of the heavenly calling, consider the Apostle and High Priest of our profession, Christ Jesus; Hebrews 3:1
In a time when many have lost their faith in the church and its priest, the above verse should be seriously considered by all. Do you have a faith, a religion, a priest, or a church? If so, do you have a High Priest? Do you know who it is? Do you know what the word of God says regarding the need of a priest and having your sins forgiven? These are extremely important questions that will not only impact your life on this earth now but will impact where you spend eternity when you die?
Everywhere we look today there is sin, corruption, scandal, and cover ups, but we are not just talking about politics. Sadly, these things are being found in churches as well. In times like this we must turn to the word of God because it is the only source of truth for us to know what is right and what is wrong. We must remember that men fail us because they are men. This is the very reason why Jesus came to die in our place and be the High Priest we so greatly need. If you will take the time to examine your priest in comparison to the Lord Jesus Christ, you may be surprised at the results. You may also find the answers that you have been looking for all along.
Going back to Hebrews 3:1, we find that the word of God says to consider the apostle and high priest of our profession, Jesus Christ. The word consider means, to fix the mind on, with a view to a careful examination; to think on with care; to ponder; to study; to meditate on.
[American Dictionary of the English Language, Noah Webster, 1828] In this book considering Jesus Christ as the true High Priest will be the goal. This will be accomplished by first looking at the Old Testament priesthood which started with Aaron. This priesthood will be referred to as the Levitical priesthood in this work. Emphasis will be put on showing how the Levitical priesthood was a type and foreshadowing of Jesus Christ and how Jesus replaced the Levitical priesthood. The priesthood of Jesus Christ will be connected with the priest of the most high God, who was named Melchizedek. This priesthood, which was before the Law, shows how the priesthood under Jesus Christ is far superior to the Old Testament Levitical priesthood. The work of the Lord Jesus Christ as our High Priest will be studied as well showing the great benefits that are found in having salvation through the Lord Jesus Christ. In concluding this work, Satan who has counterfeited the true priesthood and connected it to idol worship, will be shown as a great imitator of the Lord Jesus Christ.
Hebrews 3:1 plainly tells us that Jesus Christ is our High Priest. Although there are many religions today that have an earthly priesthood, these are not necessary because of what Jesus Christ has done for us today. It is the desire of the author that the reader will diligently search every scripture given in this work and do what the verse says, consider Jesus Christ. Jesus said himself that he is the way, the truth, and the life, and that no man can come unto the father but by him (John 14:6). Examine the proofs of the scripture and do not be fooled by man’s wisdom, tradition, previous teachings, or Satan’s counterfeit because it is your eternal destiny that is at stake.
Chapter 1
The Old Testament Priesthood
Shortly after the Lord delivered the children of Israel out of Egypt, he gave them the Law. The Law consisted of many things including the Ten Commandments, the ordinances, the judgments, and the feasts of the Lord. Also, as part of the Law he established a priesthood that would carry out all the duties regarding the Tabernacle, sacrifices, and atoning for the sins of God’s people. God chose Aaron and his sons from among the tribe of Levi to minister to him in the priest’s office ( Exodus 28:1-3 ).
1 And take thou unto thee Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office, even Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons. 2 And thou shalt make holy garments for Aaron thy brother for glory and for beauty. 3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest’s office.
There were others from the tribe of Levi that helped with the Tabernacle and the things concerning the ministry of the tabernacle, but Aaron and his sons were to be the priests.
This fact is made clear for us in the book of Numbers chapters 16 & 17. Korah, who was a Levite, along with Dathan and Abiram, who were of the tribe of Reuben, revolted against Moses and Aaron. They thought that Moses and Aaron had taken too much on themselves in the role of leadership and being priest. But it was the Lord that had given them the authority in these things.
³And they gathered themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them, Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and
