    INTRODUCTION

Get the fundamentals down and the level of everything you do will rise

    — Michael Jordan —

Have you ever built something, a workbench, chair or table for example, or baked goods, a piece of jewelry, or art, a piece of music, recorded a song or something that you made so that you might sell it, or pass it along through the generations of your family in hopes that it will continue to grow in meaning and value?

Starting and operating a business is much the same in this regard.  You build it by hand, from the ground up, and throughout its lifetime, you may experience a range of emotions, from elation and excitement as it first gets stated to the frustrations and anxiety that come during the challenging times.  But your business is an asset that has a good chance of becoming an asset you can sell or transfer at some point in the future.

There are only three basic exits from a business.  First, is that it can just wither on the vine and die.  This is mostly avoidable.

The second is to pass on your asset through time to your heirs.  This is noble, but your heirs should have a high degree of competency and ownership interest in the business already.

The third is to sell the business off to an individual buyer or as an acquisition by another company.  But to get to this point, your business must be run in a way that demonstrates its potential to generate interest to suiters of all sizes.  Of course, the converse to this scenario is to acquire another business.

This book is dedicated to the topic of organic growth strategies, which is essential for strategic growth concepts like mergers and acquisitions, which we will only touch upon briefly, but should be a reasonable goal should you wish to sell your business.

One does not need to have an MBA to operate and manage a business, but there are some skills you should develop to gain better insight into how you steer your business into the future. A future that leads to more financially rewarding and professionally operated businesses will create more value for you personally and professionally over time.

Even though I truly believe we are all talented in a specific area of our business, usually in the fulfillment of our products and services, the business owner must know how to leverage data found
