#1 I had heard rumors about what happened to Lauren. I never even knew her that well, but we had sort of hung out a few times in high school. She had moved to San Francisco when I was a senior and we met somehow. I was sleeping with her for about two weeks.

#2 I had been sober for exactly eighteen months when I met with my sponsor, Lauren Sheff, who I had known from rehab. I was surprised by my own actions. I had stopped going to meetings, and my mind would talk to me about how much better I was than everyone else.

#3 I was with Zelda, a woman I thought I was madly in love with, until she got pregnant with her boyfriend’s child. I was crushed. I couldn’t handle it. I relapsed and drove up the 5, drinking from a bottle of Jäger.

#4 I spent the last four years chasing that first high. I wanted desperately to feel that wholeness again. I was like, This time, it will be different. But I couldn’t just stop. I was being held captive by an insatiable monster that wouldn’t let me stop.

I was going to get my tattoo filled in, but I was also going to get started working and using in San Francisco. I had three thousand dollars saved up, which was a lot of money for me. I was going to find a car for Lauren.

    #6

I remember Lauren’s dad’s house from when we were together in high school. It is a European-style mansion in Sea Cliff. It looks out on the ocean, which is rough and pounding.

    #7

I had been so small that my dad would shelter me from the cold by hiding me in his sweater. I remember the smell of him, that indescribable smell of dad. He was so there for me always.

    #8

I was able to get a hold of the drug, and I took it with Lauren. It was a different world, heightened, exciting. I felt like my book was getting published and I could get any job I wanted. I was going to take Lauren with me in my new life.

    #9

I had lost interest in surfing, but bodysurfing at Baker Beach was still fun. I was able to navigate past the rocks and feel the pull of the waves out the mouth of the bay. I was able to see the world clearly and exuberantly.
