Introduction
H ow did this book ever come to be? I never saw myself as a writer and never ever thought about writing a book!
It began with a desire to preserve some of the stories of my growing-up years and what life was like back then, for my family and for future generations. At eighty-three years of age, as I’ve talked with younger people over time, I have realized that this period of history and the personal experiences of that time are almost lost. To many, they may not seem important, but my passion to share those memories continued to grow until I knew I had to write them down.
Will there be a sequel to this story? Maybe. I’m thinking about sharing some of the stories from my forty-five-year marriage to Karen and our family life. It will definitely be an adventure book!
This book is dedicated to my wonderful parents and family, and to anyone who has influenced my life in any way. You have been a part of my journey to become the man I am today, and for that, I am most grateful.
A very special thank you to Tierney Boggs, who has invested hours and hours helping us through this process to bring my story to life.
What’s your story?
School Days
39069.pngW arsaw, Indiana, was a small town of about six thousand people. The city limits were about seven blocks from the courthouse in three directions. It was longer on the east side and connected with another small town called Winona Lake.
We had five schools within the city limits, including East Ward, West Ward, and Center Ward. That makes them sound more like prisons than schools. There was also a freshman high and a senior high. If you lived outside the city limits, you rode the bus to West Wayne or East Wayne schools for grades one through five. You went to Center Ward for sixth grade.

I walked to West Ward for first through fifth grade. It was a two-story brick building. First, second, and fifth grades were on the first floor. Third and fourth grades were on the second floor.
