    CHAPTER 1

    Fire and Ice

In the space between Muspelheim and Niflheim, the worlds of fire and ice, an enormous creature appears. It is Ymir, father of the giants, formed from the waters of Niflheim’s melted ice. According to Norse mythology, Ymir was the first giant and was the father of the race of giants.

You are stuck in the emptiness between the worlds. Ymir continues to grow to immense size and becomes more and more cruel. To the south, you see the burning flames of Muspell across the vast space. The mists of Niflheim create a haze in the north. But here in Ginnungagap—the huge empty gap where you, Vili, and Ve grew up—there is nothing. No other worlds exist.

Stars, nebula, and galaxies filling the emptiness of deep space.

You’ve always craved more, and you long to escape. You thirst for knowledge, wisdom, and power. And you dream of a cosmos full of other worlds to explore. Perhaps you and your brothers can fill the emptiness and create such a cosmos. But the race
