"She’s sleeping with Keith? You mean, like, her son Keith?"

The women’s whispers bounced off the tile walls of the Boathouse bathroom.

Yeah, that’s what I heard. Gross, huh?

Their high-heeled shoes click-clacked against the hard flooring as the women each took a stall. Ellora didn’t recognize their voices, but she’d met so many new people this evening. It was hard to keep track. Anyway, it didn’t matter who was talking—the point was they were talking about her. She was sure of it, and her certainty both enraged her and made her heart feel like a block of ice.

Ellora knew all the nasty things her family said behind her back, but this was her son Ed’s wedding weekend, for Christ’s sake! To spread those vicious rumours outside the family, to her in-laws-to-be and the dear bride’s colleagues and friends? Ellora’s family disgusted her. Had they no shame?

Sitting quiet as a mouse in the end stall, Ellora tried not to breathe.

The voices continued their chatter. That Keith is pretty cute. I bet I could lure him away from his mom.

Oh, the whole topic just turned Ellora’s stomach.

I don’t know, the second voice challenged. That MILF of the groom is pretty hot. Did you see the dress she’s wearing? Holy legs, Batman. She’s like Eartha Kitt.

The first voice laughed. Eartha Kitt?

Didn’t she have legs? the second woman asked. Maybe I’m thinking of Tina Turner.

Well, you can have her, said the first, shouting over the toilet’s flush. You take the mother, I’ll take the son.
