Memory
There are many things of great importance
I need to remember, or my heart will break.
The smell of a horse and the feel of its whiskers.
The breeze on my bare and unshaved legs.
That girl, Claire, who stayed on my couch
and lost her wallet
And lit my imagination on fire.
The breathless feeling of being spun and spun
on the dance floor
And the shift before breath or movement
at the beginning of a tango.
All of the times I watched the sunrise
And the sunset on the prairie, just the sun and I,
With nothing between us except an expanse of wheat.
Waiting for the train in Paris and hearing a woman
singing to herself, a lullaby.
The man who plays accordion and sings in the parks,
Laurier and Lafontaine.
The strength of my mother
and the tenderness of my father.
To always, always trust my intuition about a thing.
That the world, full of shock and short on silences,
Is a much better
