DEDICATION
This book is dedicated to my friend, Kari Cartwright. Thank you for always seeing me as fabulous (fabulous was your favorite word). I remember you asking me to consult with you about your image ten years ago. You even had a dream that we were shopping together! That was never a reality, but a seed was planted. I wrote a book to help many women get the desired results to be fabulous. We never got to shop together, but I know you’re fabulous in heaven. Rest in peace, fabulously!
Rest in peace, Max Azria. You are indeed the designer I’ve loved the longest. The designer that made me feel like you knew me and what I would wear. Thank you for the vision behind BCBG, my absolute favorite fashion brand. BCBG stood for Bon Chic, Bon Genre, interpreted to mean good style, good attitude.
I found out its meaning the day I heard of your passing. I knew it was a reason I felt so good wearing my BCBG pieces, because good style can definitely give you a good attitude.
Mom, even at seventy-one, the age you are at the time this book was printed, you’re still fabulous. Thanks for passing that down to my sister, April, and me.
THE HEART OF WHY I WROTE THIS BOOK
Finally, I dedicate this book to women who give so much to their family that they have forgotten to take time out for themselves. My personal testimony is that I loved fashion from a young age. I got married young and after marriage, I needed to rediscover who I was and the image I would create as a wife. I didn’t want to disrespect my husband in appearance or conduct. After we had children, there was another responsibility for me to be appropriate as a mother and make my children proud because I didn’t want to embarrass them either. I was very modest, making sure my clothes covered my arms and legs and anything else that would draw too much attention to my body parts that are sacred. My shapely legs are one of the best features of my body and I covered them with long skirts. I was like a fish out of the water, not knowing what my image should be as a wife or as a mother. Over time, I’ve discovered, as a mother, that it’s for the benefit of our children that we don’t totally lose who we are after having them. Beauty is confidence in your uniqueness and that’s something that only you can contribute to the world. It’s also important to remember why our spouse married us. Keep yourself up. Just because we’re married doesn’t mean we get a pass to be frumpy. If you’ve lost a piece of yourself, get your confidence back! I pray that this book taps into the diva in you. I pray that it builds your confidence and you’re filled with the possibilities of regaining whatever you lost. It’s not selfish to take care of yourself; it is self-care. May your inner and outer beauty give other people confidence to live their true beauty as well. The world is indeed a stage and you are the star, so don’t try and hide your shine!
PROLOGUE
Since the days of my youth, I’ve loved to get dressed up. Growing up, my mom worked at a department store and made sure I was neat and groomed. I had no say in the matter. I knew I was a neat and groomed child because the hit television sitcom the Cosby Show was being watched in just about every home, and the character Rudy Huxtable on the show would wear the exact same sweaters as me. When I saw that what was on television was in my closet, it made me feel like a celebrity and heightened my love of fashion all the more. Although my love for fashion started young, I really honed my style as a teenager while reading teen fashion magazines. Those magazines gave me inspiration and I was determined to express myself. I added my own style to the afflatus that I had carefully gleaned from turning page after page. I would tear out the pages of the fashion magazine and shop for similar looks. By the time I was in high school, I had my own style, which consisted of vintage, eclectic, and prim.
I woke up each morning excited to get dressed and show my creative look. The confidence I felt about my
