The family loved playing soccer, and the brothers were kicked off their first team because the coaches said they were too skinny and didn’t have enough muscles. But they kept playing on their own, challenging each other.

Charles and Veronica wanted their kids to be good sports, but also competitive. They taught their boys to show respect to others, especially their elders and family. They prayed for some kind of relief for themselves and their family.

The Antetokounmpos family found refuge in Agios Meletios Church in Sepolia, a beautiful Greek Orthodox church in the city. They developed a close relationship with Father Evangelos Ganas, who would help them out whenever he could.

When Velliniatis met Giannis and his brothers, he saw something special in them. He gave them an opportunity, food, and hope. But his relationship with the family has since become strained.

Velliniatis, a Greek immigrant, was drawn to Giannis because he felt like an outsider his entire life. Velliniatis helped bring top-tier talent from poor neighborhoods into the spotlight, and eventually into sports.

Giannis had no interest in basketball, but he needed the money. He had to try it out for one month, and the team would help him financially. He and his brothers went to practice with a sponsor, who would help them get into Greek law allowing them to play.
