Another boring Monday night at Ft. Bragg, I thought to myself, taking a pull from my second beer of the night. There I was, sitting with a bunch of my friends, crowded into Tommy's barracks room, watching some dumbass sitcom about an extraterrestrial living with a human family called A.L.F. I took another drink, hoping a good buzz would carry me through what looked to be an uneventful night. It was January of 1988.

We heard a knock on the door. It's open, hollered Tommy, one of my closest friends I'd made since being stationed here a year earlier, and the guy who lived in this room.
