How to Cope When Your Co-Parent is Toxic
Co-parenting is not easy with the best of partners; divorce or separation leaves wounds that may take time to heal, and in the meantime, relationships are frayed and tense. However, if your ex-partner is a decent reasonable person they will put the children first, and in time you can forge a good working partnership for co-parenting.
It is a completely different story when your ex-partner is manipulative, abusive, self-centred and may be suffering from a personality disorder such as narcissism. They use the children as tools to continue a war against you, and all your efforts at reason, kindness and fairness are just used as weapons to make your life more difficult.
This is a hugely stressful and emotionally complex situation, the reason you separated from your ex was to get your life back and they are doing everything they can using the vehicle of co-parenting, to make that life as miserable as possible.
In this situation your best defence is to preserve your own sense of stability and well-being throughout all their manipulative games and trickery.
By understanding what is going on and communicating to your children what is happening in the most tactful way possible, you can bring things out into the open so your ex-partner finds it more difficult to undermine you.
This book was created to help you cope and create emotional distance from your ex-partner during your co-parenting years. By practicing psychological defence and creating emotional as well as practical boundaries you can get on with your life and make co-parenting with a toxic-ex as pain-free as possible.
Use the simple self-help tools inside this book to speed up the process of regaining and maintaining your equanimity regardless of how your ex-partner behaves or tries to make your life difficult.
Tactics of the Toxic Co-Parent
Here are some tactics commonly used by a toxic ex-partner, this is not an exhaustive list.
Refusing to accept that the breakup means you have a right to your own personal life.
Ignoring boundaries, calling you during the time you are caring for the children.
Turning up late or not at all when arrangements have been made.
Refusing to return the children when it is your turn to look after them.
Using
