Who’s that? Pippa whispered to her fellow bridesmaid Kristen. She nodded toward the tattooed lesbian who’d hit on just about every woman last night at the resort bar, The Boathouse. Did you get an introduction?

Before Kristen could answer, Shonette leaned in to join the conversation. That’s Vanessa. She’s Maggie’s dyke cousin.

What does her shirt say? Kristen asked, squinting without her glasses.

Pippa read it silently to herself and laughed before saying the words out loud. "You say dyke like it’s a bad thing."

Spooky, Kristen said, turning her focus to Shonette. "You did say dyke like it was a bad thing."

So what? Shonette answered with a child’s petulance. You think it’s some sort of psychic T-shirt?

Pippa covered her mouth to keep from laughing out loud. She tried not to come off too raucous whenever she was the only black girl in a white room. Well, a mostly white room. Shonette brought a little colour to the spa, too. With that soft black hair and tawny skin, Pippa wouldn’t have automatically guessed Shonette’s parents were originally from Guyana, but Kristen, with her pelt of sandy waves, was everything Pippa imagined a Scottish girl to be.

She’d only met these school friends of Maggie’s when the four of them started planning the wedding together, but she had to admit they’d grown on her. They had that big sister/little sister dynamic where Shonette had to be part of everything Kristen ever did. She even got all pissy last night at the Boathouse when Pippa and Kristen ducked into the powder room without her.
