    The American Revolution was not a foregone conclusion. While the various independent companies began to arm and outfit themselves, many of the colonies hoped for a diplomatic solution that would keep them part of the British Empire.

    The Baltimore Independent Cadets were the first elite infantry unit in the Continental Army. They were trained and equipped very differently from other soldiers, and they had a drillmaster who taught them how to march and load their muskets.

    On May 5, 1775, the Baltimore Independent Company traveled to the outskirts of Baltimore to greet the delegates to the Continental Congress who were passing through the city. The Marylanders enthusiastically escorted the dignitaries to the Fountain Inn, which boasted excellent wine cellars and six mahogany-finished grand parlors.

    After establishing that Washington would lead the colonial army, the Continental Congress set about raising that army. In a series of resolutions, the Congress recommended that each of the thirteen colonies establish a battalion at the expense of the Continent. Maryland answered this call in a unique way: a battalion with a core cadre of officers and NCOs from the independent cadets at its heart.

    The Maryland colony created a state-funded defense force, the Maryland Regiment, to protect them from the British and the internal threat of Americans loyal to the Crown.

    The Maryland Battalion was formed from scratch, and it was difficult to find enough officers with natural leadership qualities. Many of the officers in Smallwood’s companies possessed strong leadership qualities, and they were able to attain prominent positions in politics after the war.
