    Prologue

Amber was way too numb to feel anything as she sat sandwiched between her friends in the rental car; her mascara was running down her face as she cried her eyes out once again. The last six months had been a messy blur; she had quit her six-figure a year Silicon Valley job and lost half of her money alongside her four-year-old relationship.

Quinn had caused it all, she had never thought he would betray her; she had never imagined that he would be vile enough to bring another woman into their new home. She was still trying to come to terms with the fact that he thought he would get away with bringing his ex from high school into their bed while she was away on an assignment in Milan. She never imagined that he was vile enough to have been siphoning her inheritance money from their joint bank account into his personal account.

She didn’t think she could ever forgive herself for being so naïve. She had been too stupid to see through his bright smile and upbeat personality. He always seemed to bring the sunlight on her darkest days.

Hayley and Pearl had tried their best to warn her, but as could be expected, she had been blinded by love. She had even been stupid enough to tell Quinn what they said about him. She had been dumb enough to listen to his senseless ramblings about how her friends hated him and how they wanted to ruin her relationship. She had even gone as far as cutting ties with her best friends at his behest.

Where had she gone wrong? She had always been a practical woman, one who was quick to see through lies, diversions and deceptions. Amber was almost certain that her friends were already tired of her mental breakdowns; over the past four months, episodes like this had become her new normal , she had cried herself to sleep every night since he had left and there was not an end to her agony in sight.

Dr. Reagan, her therapist, had recommended this trip to help her heal, but deep in her heart, Amber was not sure if she came to the Island City of D’arlingtone to heal or to escape her past

    Chapter 1

Asides the tears which had almost subsided, the drive from the seaport to the hotel was uneventful, and Amber’s head was pounding by the time they drove through the majestic gates of The Seaward Oriental Hotel.

The Seaward Oriental Hotel was the embodiment of beauty and class; the narrow window slits and crenellations atop its soaring towers gave the medieval castle an intimidating, yet classy feel. In different circumstances, Amber Malloreas would have been mesmerized by the gothic and romantic
