THE NO THAT PLANTED THE SEED

On his 35th birthday, Cesar Chavez quit the best-paying—and only steady—job he had ever had.

Cesar was the national staff director of the Community Service Organization (CSO). The CSO fought discrimination and worked to register voters. But as a former migrant worker, Cesar knew the nation’s poorest workers needed help too. Cesar asked CSO to let him organize farm workers into a labor union.

Cesar was a talented organizer. He had built CSO into the most effective Latino civil rights group of its time. Even so, his idea was voted down. With that no, Cesar decided that organizing farm workers would be his mission.
