    Introduction

    GO ARMY!

    From 1775 to 1783, colonial militia fighters and full-time soldiers joined to fight the British in the American Revolutionary War. This force was the first army in the United States. Many of these soldiers had no gunpowder or equipment. Abigail Adams, who would become First Lady, even melted down her pewter dishes to make bullets.

    To face the strong army of Great Britain, they had to use guerilla warfare. This means they didn’t fight in a regular way. They planned secret attacks and took the British by surprise. It took eight years, but the Continental army finally beat Great Britain and won independence for the new United States.
