    A GROWING PROBLEM

    In the 1800s the issue of slavery was tearing the United States apart. Some people believed they had a right to own slaves. Others felt slavery should be illegal. This great divide only worsened as the country grew.

    In 1803 President Thomas Jefferson purchased the Louisiana Territory. People began to move west in great numbers. Soon those people wanted the territories to become states. Some wanted slavery to be legal in the new states. Others did not want slavery to spread west. Heated fighting broke out among the people and in Congress. Lawmakers tried to settle the problem
