    John 1:1–14

    Background Scripture:

    John 1:1–14

IN the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

2 He was in the beginning with God.

3 All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being

4 in him was life, and the life was the light of all people.

5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness did not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God, whose name was John.

7 He came as a witness to testify to the light, so that all might believe through him.

8 He himself was not the light, but he came to testify to the light.

9 The true light, which enlightens everyone, was coming into the world.

10 He was in the world, and the world came into being through him; yet the world did not know him.

11 He came to what was his own, and his own people did not accept him.

12 But to all who received him, who believed in his name, he gave power to become children of God,

13 who were born, not of blood or of the will of the flesh or of the will of man, but of God.

14 And the Word became flesh and lived among us, and we have seen his glory, the glory as of a father’s only son, full of grace and truth.

    Key Verse:

He was in the beginning with God. All things came into being through him, and without him not one thing came into being. What has come into being in him was life, and the life was the light of all people. (John 1:2–4, NRSV)

    Today’s Word

Have you ever heard the phrase Once upon a time? We hear it all the time at the start of fairy tales and children stories. It’s one of the first things that lets the reader know that they are going to hear about something made-up or make believe. Chances are, by now, you’ve also encountered the phrase In the beginning. This is different from Once upon a time.

While the saying shows up in fiction as well, In the beginning appears in a number of places in the Bible. And it has nothing to do with fairy tales or fake stories. In the beginning talks about a time before anything even existed. It introduces the work and word of God as it is used to bring all of creation into existence. If you’re ever curious about where life comes from, look no further than In the beginning.

Today’s scripture begins with that very phrase, as written by John. John tells us all about the Word (Jesus) in the beginning, showing us just how much power Jesus, the Word and Son of God, has over everything. Through Jesus Christ, everything was created! This means that nothing is too great for Jesus to handle, nothing is outside of His reach, and no darkness can overcome His marvelous light.

There is no better example to follow than Jesus Christ when you are looking to understand your life and purpose!

John, the author of this book, most likely wrote this Gospel after the Gospels of Matthew, Mark, and Luke (which appear earlier in the New Testament) were written. Those Gospels were written to record the actions and words of Jesus, which is what Acts 1:1 states, saying the previous books were all about Jesus’ works and teachings. But the Gospel of John was written to give everyone proof of who Jesus really was and is! John wrote to show us evidence so that we may believe that Jesus is the Messiah, the Son of God and when we believe, we may have life in his name (John 20:31, NIV).

This is why John begins today’s scripture by sharing with us the beginning of creation, when there was nothing but God and the Word. Jesus is the Word and was with God in the beginning. Everything was made through Jesus, and without Him nothing would exist and we would have nothing!

John used the common Greek word logos when He called Jesus the Word. Logos means word or message, but in a very meaningful and important way. Instead of just being words on a page like the ones you are reading now, logos is connected to the thoughts of God and His divine reason and creation in the universe.

This means that Jesus wasn’t just words floating in space, He was actually God’s thoughts, divine creativity, wisdom, and power. As God’s thoughts and wisdom, Jesus was more than a man sent by God, He was actually one part of God’s identity. This is why it is so incredible that God sent Jesus to walk around on earth with us! He sent a piece of Himself to guide us, give us life, and show us the right way to live and treat one another. This also means He sent a part of Himself to sacrifice on the cross so that we could have eternal life. That is how much God loves us!
