Introduction:
Few things are as near and dear to me as my childhood in Brooklyn, New York. New York is its own world; vibrant, palpable, and an unquestionable cultural blueprint. I was fortunate enough to spend 13 years there, which lead to an invaluable experience with food and culture.
As I grow and life takes me other places, I always hearken back to my days as a 90s kid Brooklynite and all that it means to me: the L train, Notorious BIG, Chinese slippers, hoop earrings from the dollar store, and Dominican blowouts. Kennedy Fried Chicken, Crown Fried Chicken, Arizona Iced Tea and of course, pizza. Family friends peppering dishes with adobo, sofrito, and recaito. Weekend trips to Manhattan with my father, one of which came months after 9/11. The promise of shoestring fries from Ruby’s Diner, coupled with the staggering resilience of that great city quelled the fears in my 10-year-old head.
I think of Knickerbocker Avenue (and
