Chapter One

Julia

There have been so many patients I haven’t had time for lunch. Today is the busiest we’ve been since I joined the practice. As the newest addition to the office, with few patients of my own, I’m tasked with assisting other doctors when they need help.

I’m going to lunch, I say to anyone who is listening before realizing no one is.

After seeing five back-to-back patients with upper respiratory infections, I’m exhausted and looking forward to a break, even if it’s short. Taking my salad and a bottle of water toward the breakroom, I see our receptionist, Carly, by the back door. She’s with someone, a man I don’t think I’ve seen before, and curiosity gets the better of me. I stretch my neck to get a better look at the guy.

He’s big, I’ll say that. He’s wearing a tank top, showing off his muscular frame and tattoos. They snake up his bulky arms and disappear under the fabric of his too-tight shirt. His hand gently brushes back a wisp of Carly’s long blonde hair, and he leans in for a kiss. The way he embraces her reminds me of a time in my life when powerful arms held me the same way. It stirs something deep inside me I thought was dead, and the space between my legs tingles.

I should stop spying on them, but I can’t pull my eyes away. There’s a hunger between them that’s almost intoxicating to witness. After the kiss, he pulls her in for a hug. His head rests on her shoulder with his face toward her neck as he inhales her scent.

Suddenly, he turns his head slightly and looks directly at me. Instead of being surprised by my presence, a smug grin curves at the corners of his mouth. I freeze, but like a ninny, I stare into his eyes.

With the same fingers he just used to brush Carly’s hair away from her face, he blows a kiss at me. A quick gasp of air escapes my throat, and I jump back, out of sight. My heart is racing when I walk inside the breakroom. I hear Carly tell him goodbye and come inside the building.

Finally getting some lunch at 3:17 in the afternoon, Dr. Sinclair?

I jump again as Denise, our billing clerk, speaks to me as she enters the breakroom. I start to answer, but I notice she’s shifted her attention to Carly.

"Was that the new boyfriend I’ve heard so much about? Girl, he is hot!"

The younger women giggle, and I feel like a fifth wheel.

Come sit and tell me all about him! Especially if he has a brother who looks like him, Denise says with a wink.

Following Denise to a table, Carly stops and turns to me before sitting down. Oh, by the way, Dr. Sinclair. Your sister called for you a few minutes ago. She sounded out of breath. I put her through to your voicemail.

I attempt to thank her, but she and Denise have already resumed their conversation.

I decide to eat in my office instead of the breakroom so I can listen to Cheryl’s voicemail. And so I can get away from Carly for a while. If my sister was out of breath, I assume the kids must be running her ragged. With three of them under six years old, she sounds that way often.

Back in my office, I grab my cell phone from my desk drawer and see I missed a call from Cheryl. She didn’t leave a message on
