Summary of Breaking History By Jared Kushner - Willie M. Joseph

    Sentenced

In 2004, my father was ensnared in an investigation led by Chris Christie. Christie's focus was a private family feud that had boiled over into public view. My father hired a prostitute to seduce his brother-in-law so he could get back at his sister. I drove to New Jersey to be by his side after his arraignment. For the first time since childhood, I put my face in my hands and cried.

I was angry at Chris Christie, who knew my father had been a major backer of his Democratic rivals, says New York City Deputy District Attorney Eric Schneiderman. Schneiderman: I could choose to be angry about things I could not control or help those I could.

    Improbable Existence

Karen Kushner's grandparents survived the Holocaust and later came to America. Her grandmother, Rae Kushner, was 16 when the Germans invaded Poland in 1939. She and her family of six lived in a town in eastern Poland, now part of Belarus. They secretly dug a tunnel and waited patiently for a nighttime thunderstorm to cover their escape. Robert Greene: His grandfather was a simple, quiet man who lived the American dream.

My parents raised us in Livingston, New Jersey, a middle-class suburb forty-five minutes west of Manhattan. My mom is an incredibly selfless and caring person, who taught us to treat others with respect. My dad had no experience in construction but found a way to finish a project after his grandfather's death. When I was 13, my dad hired me to train with him for the New York City Marathon. As a teenager, I roomed with Nitin Saigal, who became one of my closest friends.

Today, he manages a successful hedge fund and is one of the hardest workers I know. She chose Somerville because apartments in Cambridge cost 30 percent more. At the age of 19, I bought my first building and became an avid real estate investor. After interning at Goldman Sachs and Morgan Stanley, I realized I didn't want to go into investment banking. My father ultimately decided not to fight his case in court.

He felt he had sinned before God and was ready to take responsibility for his actions. The judge decided on two years in federal prison. The prison tightly controlled his calls, and we had to split the time between my mom and the four kids. Every weekend I flew with my mom to Alabama for a six-hour visitation with my dad. When Jared Kushner's father was released from prison, Chris Christie tried to block his release and shut down the family business. The experience prepared her for a more consequential role in the federal government.

    Making It in Manhattan

The purchase closed just before the market collapsed at the onset of the Great Recession. To salvage the purchase, I restructured the debt to prevent foreclosure and raised more than $500 million. I tried for three years to get them to sell the lease. Eventually, Stern made a good deal to give it up We later sold the space to Inditex, the parent company of Zara, for $324 million. Navigating the fallout was the biggest challenge and learning experience of my business career.

After that success, he went on a major buying spree, acquiring more than twelve thousand apartments. In ten years, he completed $14 billion of transactions in roughly ten years. I saw the potential in buildings that most people overlooked and learned how to make that vision a reality. I focused not on the last dollar but on the next deal. In 2006, I met New York's top business leaders through an investment I made in 2006.

Ivanka Trump was not what I had expected when I first met her. She has a big heart and a tremendous zest for exploring new things. We were both driven and ambitious, with a healthy appetite for adventure. As hard and painful as it was, I broke up with her. Ivanka Trump's mother, Wendi Murdoch, is married to Rupert Murdoch, the owner of Fox News and the Wall Street Journal.

Ivanka Trump was in the process of converting to Judaism when Donald Trump asked her to marry him. She said yes, and he proposed in a surprise ceremony at his golf club in Bedminster, New Jersey. I just hope you're serious because Ivanka is in an amazing place right now, he said. I had planned an African safari for our honeymoon, but bad weather delayed our connecting flight until the next day. Before he walked Ivanka down the aisle, Joseph asked for a
