About this ebook

If you feel the desire to fast, this book will help you to do so!

Fasting is central to every work and movement of God. The missionary’s responsibility to keep people from going to hell is carried first in fasting.

‘Few have experienced long fasts several times a year: 48 hours a week, and 21 to 40 days, as Dr. Fomum and believers in some churches in Cameroon have,’ writes Dr. Lester Sumrall in the preface to his book The Ministry of Fasting, one of the best books published on fasting.

Life-Changing Thoughts on Fasting (Volume 1) by Z.T. Fomum is a collection of inspirational and practical information that will dispel all your doubts about fasting. It will edify you on:
the centrality of fasting;
the necessity of fasting;
the benefits of fasting; and
the practice of fasting.
Prayer is a wonderful thing, but fasting is something else.

    Life-Changing Thoughts on Fasting (Volume 2) - Zacharias Tanee Fomum

    Thought One

    FASTING

    Fasting is the deliberate abstention from food for the purpose of concentrating on deeper fellowship with the Lord and the renewal of spiritual power. If prayer is the rail on which God’s locomotive moves, then fasting is the lubricating oil that makes it easier for the train to move on the rails at great speed. Fasting accelerates the movement of the train of God.

    There are some things which God will not do unless the prayer of His children is accompanied by fasting. In fasting, the individual feels as if he has done all that is possible and, therefore, God must act in a supernatural way. Examples of fasting people abound in the word of God. We shall look at some of them.

    Thought Two

    My father could fast for three days. The people of the village were angry, saying it was not possible for an old man to go for three days without food. They said during those three days he was surely feeding on human flesh through witchcraft.

    Thought Three

    The power to fast is a gift of God. The power to give to God is a gift of God. The power to serve God is a gift of God.

    Thought Four

    You will notice that after fasting and prayer, when you confront a cloudy situation, you will realize that the first position that you took was the right one. No one can miss God’s will by mistake. Often, when people miss God’s will, it is because people don’t want it.

    Thought Five

    PUTTING GOD’S WILL ASIDE FOR A LOWER THING

    For example, putting God’s will aside to sin, everybody raise their hand because they know sin is a terrible thing; but if you put aside God’s will for something that is more costly, more sacrificial, it indicates you are so anxious to please God that if God demands two, you will give three; if God says fast for one week, you will fast for two. Those that if God says fast for one week, they will fast for two, three, four days are many. What I am saying is that, in human analysis, if God says seven days, some may say, no I will do ten. Most of the people will not fast at all. Some will fast one day, some two, some will fast three, four, five. Only a few will say, to prove my consecration, Lord, I will fast for ten days, twelve days, fifteen days. Are you likely to take this latter path?

    Thought Six

    Who are those that when faced with God’s command to fast for seven days will hardly do the full seven days? At a certain level, they will negotiate and say, God, You understand. No sincere person will not find many incidences where he failed because the demands of God are high. But there are a few people and I want to say they are very few, who tend to push beyond the limits that God has set. Apostle Paul is one such example and there are a few examples in our midst. I wish they were more.

    1 Corinthians 9:3-15,

    This is my defence to those who sit in judgment on me. Don't we have the right to food and drink? Don't we have the right to take a believing wife along with us, as do the other apostles and the Lord's brothers and Cephas? Or is it only I and Barnabas who must work for a living? Who serves as a soldier at his own expense? Who plants a vineyard and does not eat of its grapes? Who tends a flock and does not drink of the milk? Do I say this merely from a human point of view? Doesn't the Law say the same thing? For it is written in the Law of Moses: Do not muzzle an ox while it is treading out the grain. Is it about oxen that God is concerned? Surely he says this for us, doesn't he? Yes, this was written for us, because when the ploughman ploughs and the thresher threshes, they ought to do so in the hope of sharing in the harvest. If we have sown spiritual seed among you, is it too much if we reap a material harvest from you? If others have this right of support from you, shouldn't we have it all the more? But we did not use this right. On the contrary, we put up with anything rather than hinder the gospel of Christ. Don't you know that those who work in the temple get their food from the temple, and those who serve at the altar share in what is offered on the altar? In the same way, the Lord has commanded that those who preach the gospel should receive their living from the gospel. But I have not used any of these rights. And I am not writing this in the hope that you will do such things for me. I would rather die than have anyone deprive me of this boast.

    Thought Seven

    People are even ready to fast for forty days to bring things to accomplishment. One should first find out if the thing being fasted for is the will of God or it is the desire of the flesh before God answers and gives him the desire of his heart and a wasting disease.

    Thought Eight

    Many brethren are talking about jobs. Where are seven days of fasting for the job? Where are ten nights of consecutive praying or five nights praying five hours each night?

    Cheap things!

    Cheap things!

    Thought Nine

    Pray that the saints would be taught by the Holy Spirit in the school of burden: e.g. three days of fasting and twenty-four hours of prayer and see the havoc that will be caused in the kingdom of the enemy. Let that be your next project.

    Thought Ten

    Only truth
