    The group set off from Sverdlovsk for the 201-mile journey north to the town of Serov. They sang songs and composed new ones, and Semyon Zolotarev was not well known to everyone in the group, but he fit in well.

    The group was warmly welcomed at a school close to Serov railway station. A janitor made arrangements so that they could store their equipment. It was a free day for the group, and the diary entry for that day was made by Yury Yudin.

    The group traveled by train to Ivdel, the last major point of contact with civilization before they set out on the journey north into the more remote Siberian Taiga and the mountains of the northern Urals. The town was the center of the Gulag camp system.
