    Insights from Chapter 1

    #1

There was a town in the United States that was once famous for its bird life and abundance of fish in its streams. But one day, it was struck by a strange blight that wiped out all life in the area. The people had done it themselves.

    #2

The town I described is not real, but it could easily be based on a thousand American towns or communities that have suffered the same misfortunes.

    Insights from Chapter 2

    #1

The history of life on earth has been a history of interaction between living things and their surroundings. The most alarming of all man’s assaults on the environment is the contamination of air, earth, rivers, and sea with dangerous and even lethal materials.

    #2

The problem of our age is the contamination of man’s total environment with substances that have the potential to harm him. Some would-be architects of our future look toward a time when it will be possible to alter the human germ plasm by design.

    #3

The problem of insect control is an example of how the modern way of life has led to the misuse of pesticides. The methods used to control insects have not only destroyed them along with the plants they were on, but have also threatened to worsen the conditions they were trying to cure.

    #4

The same thing happens with insects. We have the knowledge to solve the problem, but we don’t use it. We allow the chemical death rain to fall as though there were no alternative, when in fact there are many, and our ingenuity could soon discover many more if given the chance.

    #5

There is a crusade to create a chemically sterile, insect-free world, and it has been enforced by many specialists and control agencies. However, there is still limited awareness of the nature of the threat.

    Insights from Chapter 3

    #1

The synthetic pesticides have been so thoroughly distributed throughout
