Early in the morning, I would cruise down Madison Avenue, joining the stream of commuters as they flowed toward their workplaces. I was a relentless overachiever since childhood, and I was made for corporate America.

I was in New York on September 11, 2001, when the towers fell. I was witness to the unimaginable, and I can never go back to my former life. I was forever changed.

The aftermath of 9/11 was a thing to behold. The world seemed to be coming to an end. But underneath the chaos and rubble, there was truth.

After 9/11, we experienced shock and awe, then desperation to help the victims, followed by fear. We became afraid of what might happen, and we began to pull away from each other.

The irony is that the fear, more than the terrorism, has done the most damage to this nation. Americans’ desperate efforts to protect themselves have increased their suffering and made them divided and distrustful.

America was built on a false promise. All men were not created equal in the eyes of the founding fathers, and this is the fault line on which the idea of America was built.

New York City is not just a place, but an identity that is derived from hard work and tough love. The City is a marvel, especially to those like me who get to call it home. But the land on which New York was built was stewarded by the Lenape people for 3,000 years before Europeans arrived.

The myth of separation, the justification of lies, and the assertion of violence to control and accumulate wealth and power have been the underlying strategy of American expansion and progress.
