#1
Paul was called to be an apostle by Jesus. He was set apart for the gospel of God. He would spread the gospel and pursue this one overarching aim for the rest of his life.
#2
The gospel is not Paul’s; it did not originate with him and he did not claim the authority to craft it. It is a declaration about God’s Son, the man Jesus. The Son was fully human, divine, and the one who fulfilled the promises of Scripture.
#3
The gospel is the call to obey Christ and trust him, which leads to living by the obedience that comes from faith. Obedience flows from faith, and true faith brings about grateful, joyful, and trusting obedience.
#4
The church in Rome is described in four ways in verses 6-7. They have been called to belong to Jesus Christ, loved by God, called to be saints, and gifted by God.
#5
Paul’s second purpose for visiting Rome was to evangelize. He wanted to preach the gospel to the Romans, and he wanted to evangelize outside the church as well.
