#1 Mazy loved her life. She was farming, and everything smelled of promise. She knelt and planted, and pressed dirt around her beloved apples. She longed for the stroke of her husband's smooth finger at her temple, the brush of his unbearded cheek against hers.

#2 In the book, Mazy had a farm, and she loved her life. One day, she was tending her crops when she heard a noise behind her. She turned around and saw Jeremy with a cow that had escaped from the corral. Mazy was very scared, but she couldn’t explain why.

    #1

Mazy Bacon was a farmer’s wife in Wisconsin. She loved her life, and everything about it. She had prepared an anniversary gift for her husband, a newly planted garden with the promise of abundance. His gift to her would be the Ayrshire seed cow, with which they would expand their herd and home.

    #2

Mazy stood in her garden, surrounded by trees, and heard a noise behind her. She turned to see what it was, and saw a cow brute shaking his head and spraying foam and saliva in the air. His eyes were locked on Mazy's.

    #3

Mazy was saved by the brutes rage, which threw him off balance. She lay on her back, the ribbon of her bonnet caught at her neck, her arms like dolls’ arms, stiff and exposed. A place on her side burned like a poker.

    #4

Mazy was saved by her husband, Jeremy, who scooped her up and carried her to safety. She was badly scraped and injured, but she would live. She panted and shook, and she was too big for her husband to carry.

    #5

After the attack, Mazy was sick and in pain, but her mother and husband made a turmeric-and-water paste to stop the swelling. They gave her dark laudanum to help her sleep. She felt clammy and wondered if she had raised a fever.

    #6

The author’s mother, who was a deaf mute, was able to listen to private conversations. She was able to hear that Mazy and her husband were having problems, and she warned her not to go west with the cows.

    #7

When Jeremy sold the farm, he explained that he had been aimless until his uncle left him the place. He said that he had done this nearly two years, but no love of the earth or loyalty to their home.
