Chapter One – James
I just don’t understand why you’re holding on to all of these properties, instead of selling them and investing your money in a property that is worth more,
James snapped for what felt like the millionth time. His mother’s motives never made sense to him, and she never confided in him her plans, which he found incredibly frustrating. You need to learn how to better manage what Dad left you.
She was seated across from the table from him, and in front of each of them was a small paste of creamy shrimp pasta in a white alfredo sauce. He didn’t much like pasta, but he didn’t want to question the food she had made for him.
Every time James visited his mother and her home in Courtenay, BC, he grew frustrated with her without fail. He was well aware of the fortune she was sitting on, and the endless possibilities that were awaiting the two of them if she put that fortune to use, but she never budged. He resented her for it. He had a right to that money just as much as she did. Like her, he was a Taylor.
He was a real estate agent, and he was damn good at it. He had his own office in Campbell River, and there were satisfied clients in and out of his office every day. He had already considered what he would do with his mother’s fortune, what properties he would invest in. He could more than triple the fortune if she would just give him a chance!
Instead, she heaved a big sigh and shook her head at him, as she always did. As if he were a child. I don’t understand why you’re so fascinated with what I do with my money, James. It’s not as if I hoard it all to myself, not that it would be any of your business. I do invest. I buy you and your family nice things, and I spend it on myself. It is my money, and I wish you would stay out of it.
But you need to manage your assets, Mother. You need to get a will in place, trusts for your family. Dad died suddenly and unexpectedly, remember?
James pointed out, trying to scare her into compliance. At her age, anything could happen. That can happen to any of us. You are not young anymore, Mother. You need to be responsible with yourself and with your money.
James.
This time, her tone was firm, and her dark eyes were full of fire. I understand that you’re concerned about me, but I must insist you drop all conversation about money with me. I don’t ever want to have this discussion with you again. The fortune I have was mine before I met your father. I know that you are well aware of this. I was a damn good real estate agent, and you know my family was wealthy and invested well. The fact that you are trying to tell me where I should and should not invest my money is laughable. Don’t forget, James, I taught you all of your tricks.
James gritted his teeth. His mother was right, her advice helped launch him into his real estate career, and it was because of her that he was experiencing such success. Without her, he would not have known where to start, or where to bring in clients. He supposed he did owe her for his success, but he didn’t appreciate being reminded of it.
I know, Mom. Look, I didn’t mean for this to turn into an argument. I just wanted to get my thoughts off of my chest. It’s important to me that you know my opinion on the topic.
She raised an eyebrow. "Yes, well you never fail to give your opinion on anything, James. Still, I
