Chapter 1. Launching the Artemis Program

The Martian, a movie based on the novel by Andy Weir, was released in 2015. In the film, an astronaut named Mark Watney, played by Matt Damon, is stranded on Mars, where he struggles to survive by growing crops and protecting himself from the red planet's harsh environment. While the Martian was not the first movie about astronauts visiting Mars, it was the first movie that felt real and imminent.

The movie's portrayal of Mars, the planet itself, was based on data from real NASA missions. This attention to detail extended to the depiction of the character's experience as well. For example, when Mark Watney tries to grow potatoes on Mars, we see him carefully measuring the amount of water he uses because, on Mars, every drop counts. This focus on scientific accuracy makes The Martian a more believable movie than most science fiction.

Additionally, many viewers reasonably believed that they would see humans land on Mars within their lifetime. In 2019, a Gallup poll found that most Americans (53%) believed the U.S. should try to send an astronaut to Mars.
