I was Orual the eldest daughter of Trom, King of Glome. The city of Glome stands on the left hand of the river Shennit, not more than a day’s journey above Ringal, which is the last town southward that belongs to the land of Glome. The god of the Grey Mountain, who hates me, is the son of Ungit.

My father had a new queen, but she was not with us when my mother died. The nurse, Batta, told me and my sister Redival that we would have hard cheese instead of honey-cakes and skim milk instead of red wine.

    #3

I loved the Fox more than anyone else I had ever met. He was a great storyteller, and he always had something interesting to say. He would tell me stories about the gods and goddesses of his country, and how they were similar and different in each country.

The birth of the King’s second son was difficult. The Queen was with child soon after she arrived in Glome, and the King was in high spirits. But she was homesick, and her southern body could not handle the winter. She was soon pale and thin.

    #7

The Fox and I escaped from the palace, but
