On January 6, 2021, rioters attacked police officers who stood between them and the Capitol, in an attempt to break through andcertify the election results. The Capitol was first breached on the west front, where a man with a bushy gray beard used a shield stolen from the police to pound the left side of a big window.

As rioters broke through the door of the Speaker’s Lobby, one of the plainclothes officers raised his pistol and fired a shot. The woman wearing a Trump flag like a cape was hit in the shoulder. The tactical team rushed to her aid, and she died of her wound before the day was out.

Trump was an arsonist who was hostile to democracy, and he was willing to set the nation’s political house on fire. After his defeat in the most secure election in history, he spent weeks riling up his supporters with lies about election fraud. In December, he called on his followers to come to Washington on January 6 for a protest.

Trump’s supporters began calling for violence, and on January 4, Trump summoned Vice President Mike Pence to the Oval Office to meet with a law professor who presented a six-step plan for Pence to overturn the election. This was recognized by many as a coup attempt.

I had come to understand Trump’s methods by the end of the 2020 election campaign. His supporters were mostly uninterested in facts, and he could provide them with another lie or conspiracy theory to dispose of their concerns.

Even some of Trump’s Republican supporters began to speak out against him following the Capitol riot.

The response to January 6 depended on the likes of McConnell, Graham, and other powerful Republicans who had spent years clearing the way for Trump. Their appeals to racism, religion, and greed were subtly calibrated to allow plausible deniability.
