Chapter 1 – The Night Before

IT WAS THE DAY BEFORE the big day, and Jared was almost as anxious as he was excited. Everything was set: the wedding and reception venue, the photographer, the wedding cake, and the rehearsal dinner reservations. Ev’s wedding gown was gorgeous, and Jared’s tux was perhaps the sharpest suit he had ever worn. His best man and groomsmen had matching tuxes and Ev’s maid of honor and bridesmaids had dazzling gowns as well.

It was going to be a fantastic wedding. An expensive wedding, but a fantastic wedding, nonetheless.

Traditionally, the bride’s family would pay for the wedding. But such things were passé these days. Besides, there wasn’t anyone on Evelyn’s side to pay for anything. Her father had been out of the picture since she was six and her mother had passed away two years ago.

That meant Jared had to fit the bill. It had taken all his savings plus a personal loan from the bank, but he had managed to finance it all. Unfortunately, there was hardly anything left for the honeymoon.

Don’t stress out, Wade laughed. He reclined on his sofa, kicking his feet up on the coffee table. "It’ll all go off without a hitch. I mean, you’ll get hitched. But the wedding will be great."

Jared smiled slightly. Wade was Jared’s best man and they had been best friend since high school. Wade’s wife, Alicia, was Ev’s maid of honor—or technically speaking, matron of honor. Ev and Alicia had met in college and were besties as well. The girls chatted on the back patio while Jared and Wade watched an action movie on Wade’s TV.

You just have to get through the rehearsal dinner, Wade went on to say, then it’s back here to chill for the evening before you don the old ball and chain tomorrow.

Jared sipped his Coke and leaned back on the sofa. You say that like it’s a bad thing. But you and Alicia have been happily married for two years.

Wade grinned. Yeah, but Alicia and I know the secret to a happy marriage.

Jared cocked his head. Secret? Oh, right...

Wade and Alicia were swingers.

A little before 4 o’clock, Ev and Alicia came back inside to get ready for the rehearsal dinner. Wade and Alicia headed to their posh master suite, and Jared and Ev to the guest suite.

What were you and Alicia talking about? Jared asked, calling into the bathroom as Ev fussed over the wavy curls of her newly permed hair.

Oh, just planning for tomorrow, Ev replied.

She stepped out of the bathroom a minute later and did a little ‘ta-da.’ The sleek black gown she wore hugged her body in a way that almost made Jared jealous of the gown. Although the gown was a touch provocative for a rehearsal dinner, his wife-to-be looked damn beautiful.
