    DEDICATION

This devotional is dedicated to my saintly mother, Stella Mae Mason Parson, who

taught me that what God required of me was to live justly, love mercy, and walk humbly

with my God. Momma had an intimacy and friendship with Jesus that blessed us all.

Having that kind of walk with God has inspired this book and I dedicate it to her

memory and legacy. You were right, Momma, what a friend we have in Jesus!

DEVOTIONAL 158:The Enoch Experience: One Final Note

    Genesis 5:21-24 (NIV)

    INTRODUCTION

And Enoch walked with God: and he was not; for God took him.

    – Genesis 5:24 (KJV)

Enoch walked faithfully with God; then he was no more, because God took him away.

    – Genesis 5:24 (NIV)

Enoch walked steadily with God. And then one day he was simply gone: God took him.

    – Genesis 5:24 (MSG)

He spent his life in fellowship with God, and then he disappeared, because God took him away.

    – Genesis 5:24 (GNB)

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.

    – Micah 6:8 (NIV)

There is no greater joy on this earth than the opportunity to walk with God. What did Noah do to earn God’s favor? What great feat did Abraham accomplish to get the attention of God? What supernatural thing did Isaac do to have his name called throughout the ages? Why was Job blessed? What was so impressive about little David that he would be chosen? And what was so special about Enoch that he was just taken away? Maybe the answer is in Micah 6:8. Maybe they simply walked with God. I like how the Good News Bible says it, a life in fellowship with God.

This devotional is a journey. Although each lesson can stand on its own, taken together in sequence they will take you on a journey as you learn to walk with God. Each entry has a scripture, an explanation, an application, and an action step at the end. If you will do the things suggested in this devotional each day you read one of them, at the end of this book you will have a deeper, more satisfying, and more intimate walk with God. There are several hundred scriptures in these devotions, so you’ll know the Bible better at the end as well. But, more than that, you will have learned so much more about the nature of God, what He expects, and His desires for you.

You will find lots of repetition in this book. Some of the lessons may be identical in their theme. This is on purpose. Repetition is a great teacher and so you will find many of the concepts here presented repeatedly. But that’s exactly what walking is-taking the same kind of steps over, and over again. But the more you step, and the more you repeat the steps, the more intimate your relationship with God will be, and the more joyous your walk with Him. And oh, the places you will go!

You will also see in this devotional that every pronoun related to God will be capitalized. This may not be proper English; however, it is done for two reasons. One reason is my adoration and respect for God. I honor Him by capitalizing every pronoun and name that refers to the God of the universe. The other reason is for clarity, so you will know every time the scripture is referring to deity rather than humanity.

This full book is designed to take you through a year of walking with God if you do about three devotionals per week. So, let’s get started on the greatest walk you will ever take in your life. It will be an experience; the Enoch experience: how to walk with God!

1 GOD IS MORE THAN CHURCH

The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it.

    Psalm 24:1 (NIV)

Our God is the Creator of the universe. The earth is His. The world is His. Everyone is His. Everything is His. All are under, not only His command, but also His watchful eye. He is a master planner and an eternal strategist. How sad it is that we have reduced His interests, and our interest in Him, to only the things that pertain to our church service on Sunday morning and our weekly Bible study. Our God is so much bigger than that! When you walk with Him today, as you speak with Him throughout your day, and as you think thoughts toward Him when you rest at night, consider asking Him about things you never thought you could. What are His favorite things? What was He thinking when He created the mountains? What breaks His heart?

You may not believe God talks to people anymore as He did in the Bible. That’s okay. When you ask Him questions, He has a way of getting you the answer in a way you can believe. But He would enjoy you just walking and talking with Him and asking the questions. Pray something that is more about Him and less about you. There is so much more to God than you know. He would love to reveal Himself and let you know Him. What a joy!

God is a God you can know. He is a Father you can depend on. He is a friend you can share your life with. He is a companion you can travel this earthly journey with, and there is so much more to Him than church. The Bible is full of people who personally walked with God outside of religious institutions, sacrificial missions, and world-changing assignments. God didn’t create us just to put us to work to accomplish some terrestrial tasks. We were created in His image with minds and spirits that have the capacity to know the God of the universe and be in relationship with Him. He has invited us to walk with Him and discover the mysteries of all that He is. Find something interesting to ask Him about today. He is waiting to share life with you. Now this is eternal life: that they know You, the only true God, and Jesus Christ Whom You have sent (John 17:3 NIV).

    2 GOD IS RELATIONAL

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, and to love mercy, and to walk humbly with your God.

    Micah 6:8 (NIV)

God is relational. From His conversations with Adam and Eve in Genesis to the welcoming home of His children in Revelation, the story of the Bible is the story of God’s relationship with His creation, humankind. God is clear that His expectation for us is that we stay in relationship with Him.

Micah states God’s requirements very simply. Do justly. Love mercy. Walk with Me. Do what is right. Treat others with compassion. Stay in habitual relationship with Me. Share your life with Me. God wants us to share the ups and downs of life with Him. Go with Him through all the good times and the bad. Talk to Him about your work frustrations. Be aware of His presence at weddings, graduations, the births of babies, in hospital rooms, and in the face of death. My favorite hymn is In the Garden. The song starts out with I come to the garden alone, while the dew is still on the roses, and the voice I hear falling on my ear, the Son of God discloses … and He walks with me and He talks with me and He tells me I am His own. And the joy we share as we tarry there, none other has ever known. Walk with God.

God is relational, and He longs to be in relationship with you. Daily. For a lifetime. You can truly know Him, His voice, and His plan for your life, all through His Son, Jesus Christ. Take a walk with Him today. Go outside and walk with Him. Talk to Him. Start building a relationship. You may be surprised where this relationship takes you.

    3 HABITUAL FELLOWSHIP

Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God after the birth of Methuselah 300 years and had other sons and daughters. So, all the days of Enoch were 365 years. And Enoch walked [in habitual fellowship] with God; and he was not, for God took him [home with Him].

    Genesis 5:22–24 (AMP)

To walk with God means to be in habitual fellowship with Him, to daily interact with Him, and to share life together. It is the Enoch experience we all can have. Because Jesus Christ paid the penalty for our sins, we have been brought back into right relationship with God. Our sins separated us from God, but now we are reconciled. We are back in His good graces. We can all have the experience of walking with God. This devotional is all about how to build and maintain a lifetime of habitual fellowship with God.

What is habitual fellowship? It is being with God daily. It’s being constantly aware of His presence. It’s listening for His voice throughout the day and calling on Him regularly for your needs and even your wants. It’s allowing Him to be your companion and including Him in your daily activities. Enoch walked with God. The Bible doesn’t tell us what all that entailed, but as we read the scriptures and examine Bible stories, we know there must have been lots of talking involved. I’m sure there was worship and appreciation. Correction would have been present and many questions asked and answered, both ways. There is no mention here of great tasks, supernatural accomplishments, or worldwide revivals. Just a man walking with God. God apparently liked it so much He continued it to
