What's Even the Point?

About this ebook
It's been almost a month since my birthday, and now that I'm thirteen, I have to join a special class in my church called Rites of Passage (ROPES). Today was my first session, and I'm not sure what to make of it yet. It's supposed to be an "instructional manual" I guess, to guide me through my least favorite topics: drugs, sex, school, peer pressure, and all things generally associated with – wait for it – "teenagehood." But like, what's so foreboding about being a teenager anyway? I mean, I've successfully been one for a month and some.
So what even is the point of this class?!

Dear Diary,
Today is my 13th birthday! Can you believe it? The big 1-3. I’m finally a teenager, which also happens to be a word I’m hearing a lot of recently. At what time exactly should I expect to metamorphosize into the bratty older sister with dyed hair and facial piercings who yells I hate you, Mom!
after every minor inconvenience?
I’m joking. Partly. Truth be told, I have been feeling a little more moody now that I’m, ahem, pubescent.
Ew.
But anyways, back to my birthday. I woke up this morning
to my entire family singing Happy Birthday
to me at 6am, as is the family tradition. Needless to say, the presence of morning breath in my bedroom was abundant. I might as well have asked for a hazmat suit for my birthday present.
I was carried down the stairs by my father (another family tradition), and placed in front of The Birthday Breakfast: crispy fried bacon, scrambled eggs, a sizable stack of pancakes, and freshly
