    Chapter One

They had been best friends since childhood, but after years of dating they had never found the right time to confess. They weren’t even sure if they would ever admit their feelings for each other. But one day, as they were walking home together, Stephen couldn’t stop himself from saying it. He just told her that he loved her and that he was going to spend his life with her. She didn’t reply or anything, but she hugged him tightly.

She said I love you too, but when she pulled away from him he saw a tear roll down her cheek, she quickly wiped it away before it could hit the ground and ran away. He felt like someone had punched him in the gut, he knew that he wasn’t the cause of that tear. After a few weeks he tried calling her several times only for voicemail to play each time. It was a long time coming, but he was still hurt by her words. And so he decided that this time he would tell her how he felt about her. The next morning he woke up early and left his house without saying goodbye to anyone. He went straight to the grocery store where he bought all the things he needed. He sat on a bench outside the store and waited for her to walk by. When she did, she looked surprised to see him there, and he smiled at her. She stared at him for a moment before looking away. Stephen got off the bench and walked over to her.

Maria, will you go out with me? Maria looked back at him.

You know I can’t, Stephen. We just aren’t compatible, she said sadly. Now if you’ll excuse me, I have somewhere else to be. As soon as she finished talking she pushed past him.

That evening as Stephen was lying in bed he thought about what happened during his trip to the grocery store. All week long he’d been thinking about it, and he couldn’t figure out why she had reacted that way. She seemed fine until he asked her to be his girlfriend, which made her cry. He didn’t understand why that upset her so much, and why she wouldn’t tell him how she felt about him. He spent the rest of the night tossing and turning, he couldn’t sleep. Finally around three A.M. he fell into a dreamless sleep, and when he woke up in the morning he wondered if he had dreamed everything up.

That afternoon as Stephen was heading out of work he heard Maria call out to him.

Mr. Morgan? He turned and saw her standing by the entrance. He nodded and gave her a smile, then continued on his way. Once he was out of earshot of Maria he sighed heavily and shook his head. He had been hoping to talk to her again and now it seemed impossible, and he had no idea why.

THE FOLLOWING MORNING at 8:00 AM Stephen was sitting on his couch, watching TV. At 8:02 he heard a knock at his front door, he stood up and walked over to open it. When he opened the door he found himself face-to-face with Maria. She looked nervous and almost scared. Stephen looked at her with confusion.

Hi Mr. Morgan, do you mind if I come in? Stephen stepped aside and let her inside. As soon as she was through the door she closed it behind her and turned around to face him. Stephen stared at her in confusion, he couldn’t remember seeing her this nervous or afraid around him in months.

Is everything okay? What brought this on?

Well... uhm... I wanted to apologize for ignoring you last weekend, she started nervously. I didn’t want to make a big deal out of nothing and we really shouldn’t have ended up getting into an argument over something stupid. You probably have better things to do than wait for me to apologize to you. Before Stephen could respond Maria continued. And... um... you deserve someone who isn’t such a drama queen. You deserve someone who actually loves you. So uhm... good luck. With that she turned and walked towards her car.

As soon as she was out of sight Stephen slammed his fist against the door and sank to the floor, tears began running down his face. She didn’t mean those things, she wasn’t like that at all, she always cared about him. She was just upset because she had hurt his feelings, and maybe she was scared that she would lose him.

He didn’t care about her feelings anymore, it didn’t matter if she loved him, she was leaving him to find happiness elsewhere. Maybe that was for the best anyway.

When he realized that he had stopped crying, Stephen walked over to his couch and flopped onto it. He grabbed the remote off the coffee table and switched the channel, finding nothing interesting to watch. In fact, he could barely focus on anything on the TV. Everything was blurry, and the voices were muffled. He felt exhausted all over and his eyelids felt heavy. His eyes finally closed and he fell asleep.

It had been two weeks since Stephen had seen or spoken to Maria. Two weeks of radio silence. He had called a few times hoping that she would pick up but she hadn’t. He still kept trying though. Every night he would lay awake staring at the ceiling and wondering what had gone wrong. How could they be so different? He remembered that time when they had first met, how excited she had been, how much fun she had with him, how happy they had been. But then the problems started. The fights, the arguments, the fights, the fights. Eventually they both lost their patience and gave up.

    Maybe it’s for the best

That’s what she had said, she had kissed him goodnight and disappeared into her room. For a while they talked every night, making plans to hang out again sometime. He still hoped that someday they would talk about it, but he understood that she had her own reasons for doing what she was doing. He would never forget the look on her face when they broke up. Her beautiful green eyes had filled with pain and despair as she watched him walk away, not even bothering to say goodbye. He wished he had known that she felt that way, he would have done anything to take back the words he had said to her. That wasn’t fair of him to say, she had never meant them.

Stephen had also learned that the only person who could help him was his therapist. He had seen the same woman for years, he had seen her at his parents funeral, at his wedding, and again at his mother’s funeral. But she was never the same. He remembered her asking him if he ever felt guilty about leaving her. He told her that he didn’t feel any guilt, it wasn’t like he had planned the whole thing.

At 7:30 pm she knocked on his door. He answered and she greeted him politely. She led him to the living room and told him to sit. So today we’re focusing on your relationship issues, are there any specific questions you’d like to ask? She asked, smiling. Stephen nodded and took a deep breath.

How can I fix my relationship with Maria? She smiled and put her pen down.

There are many ways that people can change, but one thing is true, no relationship is perfect. There will be times when it seems like it will be, but then in the end everything goes back to square one. If you want to change your relationship, start small. Be patient, you won’t change Maria’s mind right away. Let her get to know you better. Don’t try pressuring her or push her too hard, don’t give up until you’ve reached an understanding of the other person. Let her come to you.

What happens when she gets tired of me? Will she leave me?

No. Stephen looked at her confused.

    She won’t leave me?

No. Because Maria won’t be able to live with herself if she does. You love her very much, and I think deep down she knows that too. If you continue dating, don’t try to force yourself to fall in love with her, wait for her. And if she doesn’t return your feelings then you’ll let it go. If she eventually breaks up with you, she should at least tell you what caused it. Even if she tells you she has moved on, she may need some reassurance. It’s important for her to know that you still love her and that you want to spend the rest of your life together.

Okay. Maria stood up from her chair and walked toward him.

If you decide to date again then be careful not to rush things too fast. Don’t assume that she feels the same way about you as you do about her, don’t let her pressure you into anything. She should be the one to initiate things. Try not to hold it against her if she does. She reached forward and squeezed his shoulder and smiled.

    Thanks Dr. Ross.

TWO DAYS LATER STEPHEN was at home alone when he received a phone call. After talking to Dr. Ross he went downstairs and got his cell phone from the kitchen, then sat down on the couch and pressed answer.

    Hello?

Hey Stephen, it’s me, came a female voice from the other line.

Maria? He asked in surprise. "What are you calling me about? Is everything alright? Are you sick? Did you break your arm? Oh my god you did break your arm.
