    Introduction: Why Wicca?

If you’re reading this book, the likelihood is you have some interest in Wicca. You’re probably considering giving it a go because maybe somebody you know is a Wiccan, and you want to know more, or maybe you just like learning about new things. Whatever the case, this book is the right place to start.

Wicca is a wonderful Pagan religion that, in its most basic form, is all about celebrating the natural world that we inhabit. However, as the result of some unfortunate misrepresentation, it can sometimes come with negative connotations. When a person hears the phrase I am a witch, it’s not uncommon that the first thing they think of is a circle of witches praising the devil or a group of teen girls performing evil rituals to curse an ex-boyfriend. Some witches might do those things, and hey, to each their own. However, those witches are not Wiccans.

The word ‘witch’ can be a bit contentious for some Wiccans. For the purposes of this book, we welcome all ‘w’-words. Wiccan, witch, witch-adjacent, wonderful person. If you want to learn about Wicca and witchcraft because you grew up watching shows like Charmed and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, that’s great. If you read about ancient Celts and want to learn more about their religious beliefs, fantastic. If you want to learn how to perform a money spell, that’s okay too. Wicca is a personal journey, and you don’t need to justify your reasons for learning and practicing to anyone. As long as your intentions are good, you can practice for whatever reasons you like.

Speaking of teenage witches, there has been some change in the image related to the word ‘Wiccan.’ Some people have realized that Wiccans are not scary old ladies with pointy noses and have moved on to a more contemporary image of magickal ladies. The kind that wear flowy skirts and have their belly buttons pierced. From the Halliwell sisters and their Book of Shadows to Buffy and Willow using witchcraft to rid the world of vampires, young and stylish witches were all the rage in the 1990s and 2000s. While this is definitely a change in the perception from evil old ladies, it is not much of an improvement in terms of accuracy.

Wiccans come in all shapes, sizes, genders, and interests. They make different life and style choices, and they are all valid in their practice. Since Wicca is not an organized religion—that is, there is no one single leader or sacred text—there is no unified idea of who can and does practice the craft. This means that all Wiccans can choose to present themselves differently from one another, and they can choose to practice in different ways. Some practice alone, some with a coven. Some practice publicly, others privately. Some choose to express Wicca through their fashion, some through their art, and some
