<1> A Racing Heart

Year 2070

I walked around, silent and inconspicuous. I hoped that no one would notice that I was a fraud. I didn’t deserve to be here, because technically as an orphan I wouldn’t be entitled to admittance into Demeter Academy. The bluebloods had a very restrictive policy that only children of alumni could attend. My adoptive parents had lobbied for an exception, which combined with my stellar grades had convinced the committee to allow me to matriculate. I was excited to start my new life away from my parents and younger sister, Esther. I told myself that in five days’ time, once I had begun classes, they wouldn’t be able to kick me out. I had just moved into the dorm today and so far, so good, but I wasn’t pushing my luck.

Once I had settled in, with all my meager belongings in their perfect place, I decided to walk around campus to explore my new surroundings. I embarked on a trek under the canopy of ancient trees, along the path toward Lake Cybele. This pristine lake was supposed to be the last bastion of wildness, a throwback from the early 2000’s, whereas many lakes had been evaporated to make room for cities.
